Some of you might have heard me tell the story before, but I'm going to do it again. This is a story that my trainer told me my coach my trainer basically, hired this guy to to help me lose weight and he, yeah, we work out, but we also do as he likes to say, we also work in mean he is kind of like a mental mental coach. While doing physical personal training. Anyways. He was like, he came over and I said, I was like, what's up? How's your day?
0:30
He goes, dude, you won't believe my day. I said why? So what happened? He goes. So I've been
0:38
on the down-low
0:39
stressing about my car for, like, two years. That's it. What was wrong with the car? He goes, nothing's wrong with my car. What's wrong with my
0:46
car? Is that my
0:47
license has been expired for two
0:49
years. And every time I drive it, there's this little
0:53
part of me that's like, oh God, I hope I don't get pulled over and have this expired. License is going to be such a pain in the ass.
1:00
And the only thing worse than that is
1:04
going to the DMV and actually getting a new license. So I haven't done it for two years. So I said, okay, what happened this morning, he goes, I went to the DMV, I said, well, why did you go? What happened? What changed?
1:16
He goes. Well, I woke up this morning and I felt that same
1:21
underlying stress, right? These
1:23
like
1:24
everybody knows what stress is like when there's like a big hairy problem or something, really big looming,
1:32
but those aren't the real killers. The real killers are the
1:35
silent persistent stresses
1:38
for the things. You just live
1:40
with day in and day out. They just eat at you. They just they become a party and he goes, I kind of noticed it was there and I decided, all right, I'm getting rid of this today. I'm not living with this. All right, I'm going to the DMV. So he said, well if I'm going to
1:54
The DMV. I'm going to go to the
1:55
DMV on my terms. What does that mean? So
1:59
he said he went on Yelp a looked up
2:01
his local DMV and
2:05
like he might guess not the best ratings. So I think it was like a two, two and a half star, you know, rating on Yelp.
2:14
He goes, okay.
2:16
The DMV's a tuner, two to two and a half star experience for most people.
2:21
I'm going to have a five star experience, I said what? Because I
2:26
decided I'm going to have a five star
2:28
experience of DMV. I'm gonna sample, how are you gonna do that? I'm going to be a five-star customer.
2:35
So, what do you mean? You guys,
2:37
I'm gonna walk in there,
2:39
like I'm a five-star customer.
2:43
And I'm
2:44
going to have a five star experience. It's okay. So what
2:46
happened to go? So I goes, I got
2:48
dressed. I got excited. I went to the DMV like people go when they're going to a party when
2:54
they're going to their best friends, you know, dinner party or you know, they're going to the game and they're full of excitement. He
3:01
goes, I got myself into that state of
3:02
mind and then I went to the DMV and I went to the DMV and I walked in and I was greeting people and I was just excited was on one.
3:13
And he goes, sure enough. I get to the DMV and I see the two and a half star experience. I see the long line of depressed people who write. Like, you know, it's like that Louis CK joke that
3:25
everybody in line for Cinnabon looks the same, they all hate themselves, you know, that's what the DMV line look like. And
3:34
sure enough, as he walks in somebody as woman, who's working there goes. Can I help you? Because he's didn't look like everybody else.
3:43
At. That's why you smiling, he's walking around. He was posture, was right, making eye contact and he goes, he goes. Yeah, you might be able to help me out. I've been putting off coming here for two
3:54
years and I need to get my license renewed you know
4:00
who's the better? Who is the best person in this place to help me out? She goes.
4:04
I I can help you come here,
4:06
cut some cuts. The line takes him on the side. Take some of the counter normally two years expired. You got to take the written test.
4:13
And he didn't study doesn't
4:15
know we don't nobody remembers that shit and
4:18
but things are starting to go his way this day so she takes him cuts the line.
4:24
Renews his license without having to take the test. Again, the written formal test.
4:29
Yeah, obviously knows that a driver has been
4:30
driving 20, 30 years, or whatever. And
4:33
he gets his gets us thing. She makes a joke. You know, she touches his arm. Whoo, like look at that arm. Oh my God. You're
4:43
You got muscles and he starts laughing and he's flirting with her. She started with him and he tells it, you know what, they gives her a compliment on the way out because he's being a five-star customer, he's being the type of customer who would have a
4:57
five star experience, and
5:01
then he walks out of there, 15 minutes later license renewed, and he had a five star experience. And so he shared this with me and I'm sharing it with you.
5:11
Because I thought this was amazing. I've been to a lot of self-help talks. I've been to seminars, I've read the books.
5:20
Watching somebody or hearing somebody go to the DMV and have a great time that meant something and it reminded me of the truth. The truth is that you get to choose your experience and any given situation you could be waiting in line, you could be delayed, you could have gotten stood up on a date, you get to choose what experience you're going to have. It's a better question to ask. Most people ask themselves questions like shit. Why did this happen? Why?
5:50
Person such a jerk. Why don't they get it? Why is everybody so annoying today, bubble? Alright, we asked ourselves terrible questions and then we give terrible answers better question. That what experience do I want to have right now? What experience do I want to have
6:04
today?
6:06
Do you want to have a boring experience or a fun experience? I'll take fun, right? You want to have
6:10
it hard and painful you want to have it,
6:11
speedy and easy, I'll take speedy and easy please.
6:15
You get to choose the experience you're going to have. And when you choose the experience before you go into it, you will start looking for evidence of that experience
6:24
rather than the the latter, right? If he
6:26
went to the DMV looking for a two and a half star experience, I guarantee he could have found it. But instead he went in for five star experience, look for people who would
6:33
give him a five star experience,
6:35
he carried himself.
6:36
As a five-star customer and therefore attracted a five-star experience.
6:42
We can do that in any situation. So that's a little mini super power, the ability to choose your experience and critically do not expect the world to give you that experience. But to carry yourself in that mood, in that state, to be a five-star customer rather than a 1 star customer who's pissed off. They're not getting five-star service. Be a five-star.
7:05
Customer have a five star experience. All right. That's it. That's the lesson of the day Story. Time with Sean. Hope you guys liked it, if you liked it.
7:11
It'll mini episodes. I'll keep doing them.
