I think what people confuse is saying anything you think and it not being informed with candor. If you're ill-informed and you say something, you're just an idiot, like welcome to President Trump, right? He just says things that are stupid or lies or whatever.

The most important relationship in life is the relationship you have with yourself. Once you have that, any other relationship is a plus and not a must.

I think if people are very clear about what they want, what they need, what they think... I don't see any plus in doing anything but that at work—and I've never seen a downside to it. The people who hold it against me for telling the informed truth, which is informed by experience or reporting or whatever, well, they can go stick it. I don't really care.

As women, we're not taught to demand or negotiate to our full potential. We're not taught to advocate for ourselves at the expense of maybe ruffling some feathers.

We don't have control of everything ... Terrible things happen and all of that, but you never lose your character ... You could lose your health, your wealth, your beauty, your family, your everything, your freedom—but you never lose your character ... That's the only thing you have control of, so remember that.

Collective resilience, strength, hope is cultivated by allowing people to talk together about their worries and their concerns. Don't try to erase them. Don't try to make them artificially optimistic. The relief will come from the permission of speaking out loud with your colleagues.

The problem with most journalists is they're incredibly shy. I just call people, or I contact them by DM ... I call them, and I go visit them. I think most people don't do that. I know it sounds dumb, but I don't go there with any story in mind necessarily.

The only rule that I follow is try to do something you love for a living because you will be better at it and you will be much happier as a human.

I was always good at cooking. It's just something that naturally came to me. And it's not because I have such exceptional technical skill; it's because I have a really sensitive palate and the nose of bloodhound.

I think women, in general, when we're making our way in our careers and we enter the workforce and in business, which is often male-dominated, it's very common to second-guess yourself. We also have been raised, because of the patriarchy, with a different set of rules than our male peers have, and so that really plays on your psyche, whether you are conscious of it or not.

When you doubt your power, you give power to your doubts.

I think a lot of people tend to not say what's right in front of them. Everyone sees an awkward situation, and no one says anything. Everyone looks down, but nobody says anything. I say something. I'm like, 'No, that's terrible.'

I think really good entrepreneurs have an ability to come up with a theory... and then tweak it along the way. I think that's really important to recognize that you can continually shift and change.

You know, one of the things that I think I get nervous about in this moment is, as you've seen, we've seen everybody's life on the Zoom screen. You've seen my son interrupt me a hundred times. You see my bedroom where I work. And, I think, in the beginning, a lot of us were turning off our video and muting the sound because we knew intellectually that we were going to pay the cost of you seeing our mothering ... I really question whether now that you've seen my life and the work that I do—the extra, unvalued unpaid labor that I do at home—whether employers are walking around right now being like 'Uh, I gotta hire a mom.

Unless you're a Native American, you too are either an immigrant or descendant of an immigrant. You don't have any more claim to this land because you got here 100 years ago than somebody who got here 10 years ago as long as they abide by the law, as long as they work hard.

When you teach, you clarify—for yourself as well as for others, and it holds you accountable in an incredible way.

70% of low-income families are run by single breadwinners, which are women and often women of color. When they lose their job, the entire family suffers.

Whatever you are, whether you're shy or outspoken or wherever, hiding yourself never works. It never works for you in a career.

I started Girls Who Code because I wanted to get to gender parity in the workforce. And what we forget about women in coding and women in engineering is we were almost at parity in the 1980s. In the 1980s, 37% of the technology workforce was female ... When I started Girls Who Code, it was was 18, and now we've slowly climbed to 22.

Of course, it feels great when someone reaches out to you out of the blue, but it also feels even better to do it ... Suddenly, you kind of feel like you connect the dots that needed to be connected in the stream of your life.
