If you put shame in a Petri dish, it needs three things to grow into every corner of our lives: secrecy, silence, and judgment. But if you put the same amount of shame in a Petri dish and you douse it with empathy, you've created a hostile environment. The minute you know you're not alone and that your experience is human and you're met with empathy, shame just doesn't survive.

The thing about shame is we all have it, no one wants to talk about it, and the less you talk about it, the more you have it.

Shame is completely self-focused. In fact, of all the kind of personality disorders, shame drives narcissism more than anything else. I define narcissism as the shame-based fear of being ordinary.

The problem that we're faced with, regardless of where you are politically, is that, at this point, we're descending into two camps that despise each other where 42% of people on both sides would characterize the other party as downright evil. And both our media and our social media environments are exacerbating the situation.

My hypothesis was fear was the greatest barrier to daring leadership; it turns out it's not ... If fear is not the greatest barrier to daring leadership, what is it? And it turned out that the answer is armor. It's not that we're afraid; it's how we self-protect when we're afraid that gets in the way of being courageous.

The difference between vulnerability and fear is vulnerability is about showing up when you can't control the outcome.

If they can be held liable for enabling pedophiles who use their site to endanger kids, then why can't we hold these companies responsible for those who use their sites to advocating the mass murder of kids because of their race or religion? If your actions online cause harm or death in the real world, you should be liable.

The best way to describe shame is the feeling that we experience when we don't feel good enough, when we feel not blank enough—smart enough, pretty enough, strong enough, powerful enough, influential enough, relevant enough.

On the national level, Kara, I think we're seeing that cash relief and basic income is the future and should be the present.

If you take in all the data about what people think, you will lose the ability to be brave with your life ... If you don't care what anyone thinks, you lose your capacity for connection.

I believe in permanently banning him [Donald Trump]. The world's largest platforms have banned the world's biggest purveyor of lies, conspiracies, and hate. The impact was actually huge; one study done by Signal Labs found that after Twitter removed Trump, there was a 73 percent drop in disinformation about the election on social media. So, we don't want YouTube and Facebook or Twitter to lift their suspensions and allow Trump back on to spread his lies and incite violence.

I truly believe that we have work to do. I think that poverty is wrong. I think that we have failed to meet our obligations to those who are in need and vulnerable and disadvantaged and marginalized. I think we waste human capital through incarceration and through denial of basic services. And I know that the only way things change is if people do the work to create that change—and I'm one of those people.

If you had ranked-choice voting, Trump might not have won the Republican primary in 2016.

Anyone looking at the effect of cash relief sees that it's working at a higher level than any other policy that's been enacted in terms of improving people's lives, improving children's ability to learn.

I do not believe in conversion of ideology. That is a fundamental issue for me. I do believe in convincing people that choosing differently can get you better outcomes. And, so, my responsibility, our responsibility, is not the conversion of the ideological bent of those who share the nationalism and supremacy notions that drove that insurrection. Our responsibility is to say to those who are looking for a place to be—even if they hold to their normal conservatism—that voting in our party will get you the outcomes that you need ... My mission is to focus on an outcomes-driven, value-based, set of policies and to do everything in my power to make that so.

Shame is self-focused. Empathy is other focused.

I believe that universal basic income is the future and should be the present. I devoted years of my life to trying to bring that message to Americans. And I'm happy to say that, now, a majority of Americans agree with that, and we're seeing the positive effects of it very, very quickly.

Democracy can only work when it works for everyone. When you break any part of democracy, you break it for everyone—no matter who your target is.
